Male Penis Surgery
All You Need to Know about Male Penis Surgery including different procedures, risks, costs, and recovery.
Male penis surgery generally refers to the enlargement of the penis, either through lengthening or widening, yet can also be used to correct problems with the penis, such as excessive curvature. The penis can typically be enlarged by an inch or more, depending on the original size, while widening techniques may increase the circumference by up to 35 percent. Other penile surgery procedures include glanular enhancement, penile implants, curvature correction, and penile reconstruction.
Half of the penis is actually situated inside the body; attached as it is to the pubic bone by a suspensory ligament. The lengthening procedure involves the detachment from this ligament through a small horizontal incision in the pubic region. Weights and stretching devices are then typically employed over the course of a couple of months to increase the size permanently, which could be an extra inch or two. Those who are overweight may also consider having liposuction to reveal more of the penis. The main disadvantage is that subsequent erections will point down, plus public hair will grow around the base of the penis.
Penis widening is sometimes performed the same time as penis lengthening in male penis surgery. It involves layers of special dermal-matrix graft material to be wrapped around the penis shaft a number of times. The surgeon first makes a horizontal incision in the pubic area, as well as perhaps another behind the glans penis (the head), to provide access and will suture in the graft material. It will go on to attach itself to the penis naturally after around six weeks. Girth gain can be anywhere between 25 and 35 percent, depending on the original size.
Glans penis enhancement can also be performed nowadays, which was not always so. Previously, only lengthening and girth enhancement could be performed, leaving a somewhat odd look between the larger shaft and smaller head. Glans penis enlargement surgery maintains the symmetry following widening and involves the injection of hyaluronic-acid gel over the glans penis area. This procedure is performed via a small gauge needle and can be done under local anesthetic. It only takes about an hour and gains can be as much as 20 percent on the circumference. The downside is that the results are temporary, with the glans returning to normal size after a year or so.
Congenital or acquired penis curvature can often be corrected by male penis surgery using the Nesbitt procedure. This involves a number of plication (folded) sutures placed along the opposite side to the bend on the penis shaft. This procedure often shortens the penis somewhat (in relation to the angle of the arc), although the patient could also have penis enlargement surgery to offset any shortening.
As with any type of surgery, there are potential risks with male penis surgery, which, although rare, could include a side effect to the anesthetic, post operative infection, and damage to nerve tissue. Side effects can also be psychological in that penis enhancement may not live up to expectations. The cost of penis surgical enlargement in the US is on average around $4,000 or $5,000, and as much $20,000 depending on the scope of procedures undertaken.
